You may be hoping to place your child for adoption but are worried about the additional expenses of a pregnancy.

The good news is that adoption is completely free for the birth mother in the state of Ohio, and you may also be eligible for additional financial assistance.

Continue reading to learn more about what areas you may qualify for financial support and how to begin taking your next steps in the adoption process.

Financial Assistance for Birth Mothers

In the state of Ohio, the adoptive parents are required to cover all pregnancy-related medical and legal expenses for the birth mother.

Up to $3,000 of the following living expenses may also be covered by the adoptive parents/agency during the pregnancy and up to 60 days after birth:

  • Rent/mortgage payments
  • Utilities
  • Groceries
  • Household goods
  • Personal care items
  • Transportation to or from work/school

Hopefully, learning more about the financial assistance available will relieve your worries about pregnancy-related expenses and allow you to make an adoption decision based on what’s best for your unique circumstances.

Next Steps

Whether you’re sure adoption is right for you or are still unsure, meeting with an adoption agency can help you learn more about the process.

The agency will share with you the types of adoption, with the three most common being:

  • Open adoption: You can choose the family you want to adopt your baby and decide if you want to keep in contact with them. You can also choose how involved you want to be in the baby’s life.
  • Semi-open adoption: You can still have contact with the family and baby, but a professional adoption agency will help manage communication and keep your identifying information confidential.
  • Closed adoption: You won’t have contact with the baby, and the identities of all parties are kept confidential. The court keeps adoption records sealed.
